Kate Madison’s stylish second-hand clothing shop has been a big success in New York, supporting her and her four kids since her husband’s untimely death. Now her children have grown up, they are ready to forge lives of their own. They all choose to play against the odds, much to their mother’s dismay.
Isabelle, a dedicated attorney, is in line to make partner at her Wall Street firm, when she falls for a client she represents in a criminal case. She tells herself she can make a life with him – but can she? Julie, a young designer, meets a man who seems too good to be true and falls under his spell. She marries him quickly, gives up her job, moves to LA to be at his side – is all what it seems? Justin is a struggling writer who pushes for children with his partner before they’re financially or emotionally ready. Will the strain on the relationship take too high a toll? Willie, the youngest, a tech expert, makes a choice that shocks them all, with a woman fifteen years older.
Kate – loving, supportive and outspoken – can’t keep her children from playing against the odds.
Can the odds be beaten?
One thing about this book is that it is a pure family drama. It tells us a story about a woman who has raised her children facing all odds and to see them happily settled down in their life.
but obviously they all face some sort of odds which has to be beaten. What i really liked this book is the narration of the author and her unique way of making the readers listen to her story. Previously I read Dangerous Games by this author but i seemed to like this one more for its beautiful writing and narration.
I have to say, the idea of this was quite interesting and original!
The story tells us that
The most difficult lesson
for a parent is that you are unable to protect your children from mistakes
they make – you can only love them and stand by them.
The character development in this book wa quite impressive. Each one of the characters had unique story to tell and their own demons to face. The story wonderfully shows how each of them faces the difficult situation and end up with their choices of life.
I wasn’t able to relate to them – but for once, I didn’t mind as this story was more plot than character driven
It was really easy to understand them and I liked that they weren’t overly complex so it kept the attention towards the plot rather than figuring out the characters!
I will say that I was able to guess the conclusion but there were times I was really unsure of what was happening because there were so many twists and turns!
I can’t talk too much about the plot without giving it all away so all I’ll say is, it’s super unpredictable and totally worth the read!
HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK? ARE YOU PLANNING TO READ IT?
